A macronutrient is a type of food… either fat, protein or carbohydrate- all are part of our daily diets.  They are essential to the human body and provide us with energy (carbohydrates and fats) and muscle building/muscle maintenance (proteins).  Macronutrients are either immediately consumed by the human body or stored as energy for later use.  See examples of each in the chart above!

Macronutrients are extremely important, especially when trying to keep a healthy diet and exercising!  Each macronutrient has a set number of calories per gram: proteins and carbohydrates have four, while fats have nine.  Knowing this information is crucial for individuals trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy diet.  Naturally, if a person is looking to cut bodyfat or lose weight, most often they will need to cut their calories or adjust their caloric intake.  Someone looking to gain weight will seek to increase their calories in order to gain lean muscle!

In today’s day and age humans consume more carbohydrates than any other macronutrient.  Vastly different than our predecessors!  Before we became civilized humans consumed more meat and fats than carbohydrates.  This is why Ketogenic diets are popular today!  The theory behind the Ketogenic diet is that your body will utilize fats for energy and protein for muscle-building/maintenance; rather than the carbohydrate macronutrient which- if not used in ample time can and most often will be stored as fat! 

With that last tid-bit of information, you’ll probably better understand why the Keto diet has become so popular.  It is after all how the human diet began!  With that being said… we suggest a transition into a Ketogenic diet; not an immediate “switch” to a Ketogenic Diet.  ELC prepares low-calorie lunch and dinner options; usually prepared with less than ½ the calories of the same restaurant prepared menu items!  Additionally, ELC offers many Ketogenic options that are tasty and sure to fit into any low-calorie, keto diet. 

If you’re not sure how to structure your diet, talk to your health professional or registered dietician.  Many gyms offer nutrition consultations and some personal trainers are certified nutritionists as well.  Take the time to research what options are best for you.  However, if you are not ready to take those steps, consider eating a balanced diet!  All our menu items have been created with balance in mind and will help you with your health and wellness goals!
